A new rotor wheel is delivered to the Bratskaya HPP
As part of a comprehensive program titled "New Energy", which is aimed at upgrading EuroSibEnergo's hydroelectric power plants, a new rotor wheel has been delivered to the Bratskaya HPP. This is the eleventh hydroelectric unit to be replaced at the third most powerful HPP in Russia.
The rotor wheel weighs over 72 tons and is 6 meters in diameter and about 2.5 meters high. It took two months to transport the rotor wheel from the manufacturing plant in Sankt Pölten (Austria) to Bratsk. First, the manufacturer of the hydroelectric unit, the Voith Corporate Group, sent the rotor wheel from Sankt Pölten to Saint Petersburg by water; then it was loaded on an appropriate motor vehicle and transported to the Angara Region at a slow speed not exceeding 60 kph.
The new rotor wheel will be put into operation in June 2016. This will result in an improvement in the performance of the hydroelectric unit by 5% and will boost electricity output at the Bratskaya HPP.
The New Energy comprehensive HPP upgrade program of EuroSibEnergo involves large-scale overhauls and replacement of main equipment at the Company's three largest HPPs in Siberia: the Krasnoyarskaya, Bratskaya and Ust-Ilimskaya HPPs. This will include upgrades of hydroelectric units and replacement of rotor wheels, transformers and outdoor switchgears at the HPPs.
Following the completion of the first stage of the New Energy program, by 2018 EuroSibEnergo's HPPs in Siberia will increase environmentally friendly electricity generation by 1.5 TWh per year, while water consumption will remain unchanged. The impact of upgrading existing HPPs is comparable to construction of a new 400 MW HPP in Siberia. This will enable partial replacement of coal-fired generation with hydropower, saving up to 800,000 tons of coal per year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants by 2 mln tons per year, which will have a positive impact on the environment in various regions of Siberia.
In the course of HPP upgrades, EuroSibEnergo will use primarily domestically produced equipment. OJSC Power Machines will be one of the key partners in the program: the company will supply new rotor wheels for the Krasnoyarskaya and Ust-Ilimskaya HPPs and high voltage transformers.
Oleg Prichko, CEO of PJSC Irkutskenergo: "The contract for the delivery of six rotor wheels to upgrade water turbines at the Bratskaya HPP was signed with Voith Hydro in September 2011 at the Baikal Economic Forum. The overhaul of water turbines involving the replacement of rotor wheels will help improve the performance of the Bratskaya HPP to meet the highest global standards and will improve the reliability and quality of power supply to consumers in various regions of Siberia."
