A unique solution among Russia´s energy companies is adopted at the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP

 

A solution that is unique among Russia's energy companies has been adopted at the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP; it involves using a heat pump to supply heat and hot water to the adminisrative and industrial building. Before the heat pump was installed, heat and hot water had been supplied to the adminisrative and industrial building from six electric boilers with a total installed capacity of 960 kW and annual electricity consumption amounting to 2.2 GWh. At the same time, discharge of water from transformer cooling systems into the Angara River resulted in heat losses that were much greater than the amount of heat required for the administrative and industrial building of the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP.

In order to reduce electricity consumption for heat and hot water supply and to prevent unnecessary heat leakage, the company has adopted an innovative solution based on global experience in the use of alternative energy sources; it involves using a heat pump, which makes it possible to transfer heat from a heat source with a lower temperature to a consumer with a higher temperature. To do so, a Vitocal 350-G Pro BW352A.172 vapor compression heat pump manufactured by Viessmann Werke GmbH&Co. KG has been installed at the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP; its heat generating capacity totals 400 kWh. Operation during the heating season has demonstrated that its capacity is sufficient to enable the electric boiler house to satisfy the demand for heat in full and at the same time to reduce electricity consumption considerably; the amount of electricity consumed to supply heat and hot water to the administrative and industrial building of the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP has decreased by a factor of 5.5.
