A rotor wheel for the Bratskaya HPP manufactured by Voith Hydro is delivered to Bratsk

Under a contract for the delivery of six rotor wheels manufactured by an Austrian company Voith Hydro to the Bratskaya HPP of OJSC Irkutskenergo (forming part of EuroSibEnergo Group), the first rotor wheel has been delivered tonight to Bratsk airport by an An-124 aircraft of Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The rotor wheel manufactured by Voith Hydro was shipped from Austria and delivered from Vienna to Bratsk via Moscow.

Heavy cargo is traditionally transported by air by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, which specializes in super-heavy and oversize cargo transportation. Due to a considerable weight and size of the rotor wheel (it weighs 72.658 tons and is 6,001 mm in diameter and 2,453 mm high), a special road train is to be used for further transportation of the cargo through the city.

The upgrade project involves increasing the output of each water turbine at rated head to 250 MW and improving their efficiency by 5 to 7%, which will enable an increase in electricity output. The average payback of one rotor wheel is estimated at 9.8 years. Under the contract, between 2014 and 2016, Voith Hydro shall supply two rotor wheels per year to the Bratskaya HPP. The delivery of the second rotor wheel for the next power generating unit of the HPP is scheduled for the second half of 2014.

Vyacheslav Solomin, acting CEO of OJSC EuroSibEnergo: "All companies of the Group are implementing programs aimed at upgrading equipment and increasing its capacity. The first six hydroelectric units of the Bratskaya HPP were overhauled between 2004 and 2010; they had been put into operation when the reservoir had been filled. Following the replacement, the efficiency of the rotor wheels increased to 95.3%. Due to the implementation of the project, the Company became one of the winners of the first project competition under the Kyoto Protocol held in 2010. This project has enabled an increase in electricity output at HPPs and a reduction in thermal power generation, thus reducing carbon emissions."

Oleg Prichko, CEO of OJSC Irkutskenergo: "The contract for the delivery of six rotor wheels aimed at upgrading water turbines at the Bratskaya HPP was signed by Voith Hydro and OJSC Irkutskenergo in September 2011 at the Baikal Economic Forum. The overhaul of water turbines involving the replacement of rotor wheels forms part of OJSC Irkutskenergo's investment program aimed at improving equipment performance at the HPP. In 2014, the Company plans to start a scheduled replacement of rotor wheels at the Ust-Ilimskaya HPP."
