EuroSibEnergo and Hydro-Québec conclude an agreement on cooperation in research and development in the sphere of hydropower generation and electricity transmission
March 7, 2013. Montreal. EuroSibEnergo, Russia’s largest independent power company, and Hydro-Québec, the world’s largest hydropower producer, concluded an agreement on cooperation in research and development in the sphere of hydropower generation and electricity transmission projects. The agreement was signed by Artem Volynets, CEO of En+ Group (owner of EuroSibEnergo), and Élie Saheb, Executive Vice President for Technology at Hydro-Québec.
Under the agreement, Irkutskenergo (controlled by EuroSibEnergo) will gain access to the R&D results of Hydro-Québec’s research institute (IREQ), one of the world’s key R&D centers focusing on hydropower generation and electricity transmission technologies, and the license for their use in Russia; in its turn, Irkutskenergo will co-finance research and development.
The companies have already identified seven priority projects to cooperate in, including state-of-the-art condition-based maintenance technologies for turbines and generators at HPPs, integrated diagnostic tests and turbine damage projection, diagnostic tests for HPP dam foundations, optimization of electricity transmission limits, maintenance of energy system reliability etc. Given the similarity of climate, the use of Hydro-Québec’s technologies at the company’s HPPs in Russia will increase their efficiency and the reliability of the entire energy system.
“EuroSibEnergo and Hydro-Québec are industry leaders. Our companies have the same approach to sustainable and responsible development of hydropower industry and continuous improvement of technologies; our assets are located in the areas which are geographically similar. Joint R&D efforts of two industry leaders will not only enable to transfer the most advanced technologies for hydropower generation and electricity transmission to Russia, but will also give a new impetus to the development of the entire industry,” commented Artem Volynets, CEO of En+ Group.
“We are very pleased with the recognition of IREQ's expertise in technological innovation by a company as significant as EuroSibEnergo. Technological innovation is an important activity for both Hydro-Québec and Irkutskenergo. This cooperation is part of an open innovation approach," said Élie Saheb, Executive Vice President for Technology at Hydro-Québec.
