Bratsk hydroelectric power plant celebrates its 50th anniversary

Bratsk hydroelectric station is celebrating its 50th anniversary today as it was 28 November, 1961 that the first hydroelectric generator was put into operation. Since then the Bratsk power plant was the second in the world to generate more than a trillion kWh. The plant is being constantly renovated. The first phase of the renovating procedures involving replacement of 6 turbine rotors was completed in 2010. Additional 6 rotors will be replaced in the next 5-6 years during the second phase, which starts in 2011.

Veterans, currently working power engineers, guests of honor and citizens of Bratsk will participate in the celebrations of the anniversary. Awards will be given to the winners of the creativity competitions dedicated to the power plant’s 50th anniversary.

Following is the program of the festivities:
28 November – official meeting;
29 November – meeting of the Bratsk power plant veterans;
1 December – research and practice conference “Bratsk: history of construction, operational experience and perspectives”;
2 December – official meeting in the cultural centre “Bratsk-Art”.

Neither severe weather conditions, nor novelty of the project, nor the fact that they had to move from other regions could stop their work. Today specialists of the Bratsk power station are keeping traditions started by engineers who devoted all their knowledge and efforts to ensure that citizens and enterprises of the region enjoy a reliable constant electricity supply”.
